Is someone keeping an eye on your home? A CCTV system will deter criminals from targeting your property, or identify them if they do.
What is “Distraction Burglary”
Distraction burglary is a method of gaining access to a property or a person’s belongings under false pretences.
Criminals will dress up in fake ‘work uniforms’ and drive falsely branded vehicles in an attempt to gain your trust – and then access to your home.
Often thieves will work together in a team. While one man knocks on the door desperately trying to sell you a (fake) product or service, his accomplice will be in and out of your home through the back door. It’s the perfect distraction.
If you’re elderly or you live alone, you’d make the prime target. Why? Because the thieves won’t have to worry about other residents catching them when they break into your home.
Now, you might be wondering how they would even know if you live alone…
These experienced criminals will watch your home for weeks if they have to, to find out information about your daily routine. How often do you leave the house? Do you lock the doors and windows at night? Is there anyone else in the property?
How can I avoid being targeted for a distraction burglary?
The answer is simple. You need to safeguard your home with a reliable CCTV system.
Choosing a house without security measures is a criminal’s top priority. If they can see that your home is equipped with a CCTV system, they will avoid your property and possibly the whole street in fear of being captured on tape.
If there’s any suspicious activity around your property, you will have video evidence that can help the police to identify and prosecute suspects.
In addition to that, a CCTV system allows you to see who’s at the door before you even answer it!
