Crime in Your Area – Get Educated!
What is the likelihood of a burglary or violent crime in your local area? There are two types of people in this world, those that always fear the worst and those that think ‘it will never happen to me.’ Here at Guardian Security & Fire we can be a bit over zealous on the security front at times – but then we do it for living after all!
There’s no doubt that the area you live in affects the probability of your home or business becoming the victim of an attack. We say get educated! Knowing what’s going on in the area can help you prepare for what might be about to happen. Never going to happen to you…?
In 2012-2013 1 in every 1000 people in Kent was burgled
This statistic relates to people and not to households. Given the number of people who live together in family homes and shared accommodation the percentage is a lot higher when looked at in terms of the number of houses attacked per 1000 houses.
Every 37 seconds a UK home is burgled
We cover all of London and the South East and unfortunately the statistics get worse as you go further into London. Crime rises in line with the density of people living there.
Go online and have a look at your local police force’s website. The crime statistics will be there and you can see for yourself what is happening in your area. It is also important to stay up to date with recent news and this will also be available from your local police force. If there is a spate of crime in the area targeting one particular type of premises, social group or area it is invaluable to know this early and take the necessary steps. Crime often happens in waves while the police track down the offenders and it’s no good finding out about it too late!
So what should you do to prepare?
First and foremost do the simple things right. Read our article The Top Ten Recommendations for Protecting Your Home for a list of free and easy things you can do to improve security.
In the event that you decide you need some form of security protection you will soon realise the options are very large. At Guardian we always send a qualified surveyor to all our potential customers to discuss options and design the best system for the budget and building free of charge. For instance an isolated farm house may need a monitored alarm (read Why Have a Monitored Alarm for more details) whereas a house in London may decide to go for an audible only system. Likewise there is a large range of CCTV options with varying degrees of reliability and quality. One thing is certain and has been proven by people a little more objective than us.

Nowadays burglar alarms are cheap, reliable and very cost effective to run. We predominately use wireless technology which avoids the need for unsightly cables and means we can install them in less than a day (read Wired Vs. Wireless Burglar Alarms – The Facts for more info). A burglar alarm installed by an NSI approved installer (such as us) can also lead to a reduction in both home and commercial insurance premiums.
Whatever you decide to do – do with all the facts available and get educated!
