Considering safeguarding your home? Should you get a wired or wireless burglar alarm system? Let the experts help you decide.
Read on to learn the pros and cons of each device.
Wired or wireless burglar alarm?
When it comes to reliability, wired systems just about have the edge. However, this involves having more holes drilled into walls and ceilings than a wireless model.
Not only that, if you move home, you cannot easily take a wired system with you.
There are two separate parts to the security system and an array of sensors around your home or business premises, together with the control panel. Along with this there is also the manner in which the system connects to the outside world.
For instance, your system may connect to a remote monitoring station, or you may send commands to it via your mobile phone.
The sensors in the premises connect to the control panel, either by wires hidden in the walls and floors, or wirelessly. The system then connects to the rest of the world through your landline, or wirelessly. In the second instance, your system has its own mobile phone.
Fewer homes have a landline
One problem with wired systems today is that fewer homes have a landline. Many people now rely entirely on mobile phones, which means that there is not really a choice: wireless is the way to go for communication outside the building.
Inside the building, it is largely a matter of preference. However, wireless has several advantages.
You simply install the control panel and mount the sensors wherever they are needed. This is a good choice for people who rent their home or for buildings that may be grade one listed. Furthermore, if, or when, you move home you can simply take the system with you.
Are wireless systems reliable?
Well, that all depends on your property.
When we perform a free home security survey, one of the things we are looking for is whether a property would benefit from a wired or wireless system. Some of the considerations we have to make are down to how reliable the wireless communications would be inside that property.
For example, we would look at how thick the walls are and where any obstructions to the signal could be a problem. Wireless systems used to be considered less reliable as they can be interfered with by these factors. However, after more than 10 years of research and development, they have more or less caught up with their wired counterparts.
To sum this up, the best way of finding out which is better, from a reliability standpoint, is to have a free home security survey from the specialists.
