Kent Police confirm that there were no fewer than 7,356 crimes reported in Margate during the year June 2014 to May 2015. With a population of 57,000, that’s more than one crime for every eight residents! Margate crime figures reveal that it is indeed a dangerous place to live…

If you live in Margate, you have a one in eight chance of being on the receiving end of a crime every year. Looked at it another way, statistically, every eight years you could be targeted.

Margate crime figures are just that – figures.

Of course, that’s just statistics. You could live in Margate your whole life and never have a problem. Equally, you could be the victim of a crime every couple of years.

The figures for burglary are pretty distressing. There were 468 burglaries during the year. That’s less than the figure for criminal damage and arson which totalled 833, but it’s still 468 families or businesses who were burgled.

In the case of a business, it’s bad enough, but in the case of your home, you can lose things that are irreplaceable.

Things That Cannot Be Replaced

No amount of insurance compensation can bring back the emerald engagement ring that your grandmother left you. Nor the mementoes that grandad brought home from the beaches of Normandy in the Second World War. These things cannot be replaced by any amount of money.

Yes, if your tablet gets stolen, you can simply buy another one. Even so, can you replace all the information stored on it? Can you possibly even REMEMBEMargate crime figures high for burglaryR all of the information stored on it?

The worrying thing is that, even in a place as rife with crime as Margate, many people still do not take the simplest precautions to protect themselves from burglary.

First Line Of Defence

The most obvious first line of defence is a burglar alarm. If you were a burglar and you saw an alarm box mounted on the wall of a house, but the next-door neighbour didn’t have one, which one would you choose to burgle? It’s what is known as a no-brainer, isn’t it?

Especially when, in Margate, your chances of getting caught and going to prison are so minimal that they are hardly worth considering.

This may shock you, but of the 7,356 crimes reported to police in the last year, just 516 were sent to court. Of those, the number given a prison sentence was just – wait for it – 105! That’s 1.4% of all the crimes committed during the year.

Looked at from the point of view of the burglar, he has nearly a 98% chance of getting away with it. Of course, he could be given a community sentence (117) or fined (27) or ordered to pay compensation (5). That still leaves them with a better than 95% chance of getting away with it scot-free.

If you live in Margate, what would you rather do? Spend a small amount on security, or take that risk?
