security and smartphonesWhen you are away from your property, whether it is home or business, you can now enjoy peace of mind by being able to see what is going on and receive alerts on your smartphone, tablet, or other devices.

Many alarms can now be set to notify you by text or email when they are triggered. As a result, when you receive an alert you can use your smartphone to access your home or business security cameras to see what is happening, enabling you to make instant decisions as to the best course of action.

Not only can you view live events, but you can also view recorded material stored on your camera’s built-in DVR. So you can choose to play back video from earlier in the day, or instantly review the event that triggered an alert.

Remote monitoring on your smartphone or tablet

One system manufacturer’s website shows video footage of two men robbing a home while the owner is describing the events over the phone to her local police station. She describes the intruders and what they are doing, while the police officer she is talking to tries to reassure her that police are on their way.

Police are indeed on their way, and in less than four minutes surround the house capturing the two robbers before they have a chance to escape. The lady reporting the crime is clearly very upset but the security system limits the emotional fallout to the bare minimum whilst enabling the police to catch the perpetrator.

Security and Smartphones – But there’s so much more possible with an app

Not only can you see what is taking place in real-time on your property, but you can also control your camera(s) from your smartphone. You can zoom in to pick out detail, and pan and tilt the camera. In some ways, you get a better picture of what is happening than if you were actually at the property at the time, since if you have three or four different cameras you can switch from one to the next more quickly than if you were there running from room to room.

You can also adjust schedules while you are on the move and toggle between different saved schedules from the smartphone app. You can adjust motion alert settings and control which of your cameras sends you alerts with the flick of a finger. If you catch sight of something of interest that is worth saving or sharing, you can download it and email a link to view it, or even upload the clip to YouTube.

With some systems, you can now even control multiple sites all from one device.

Peace of mind

Of course, peace of mind is the most important thing. You can use your smartphone to keep an eye on your teenagers playing in the garden, or in the house so that you know they are safe even though you are out. If they should get up to mischief you can immediately phone them and tick them off! Equally, you can check on your business premises while you are at home, or even away on holiday.

Certainly, using your smartphone with the appropriate app will enable you to be there, even when you are not.
