When considering how to secure your home, there are a number of things that you can do. Here, we are just going to concentrate on the five most important things to bear in mind during the winter months.
Our first step is possibly the most obvious, but nevertheless still important – keeping doors and windows closed and locked whenever possible.
You would think that locking doors and windows before you go out is standard procedure, but you would be amazed at just how many people do go out and leave doors on the latch and windows unlocked. This is a festive treat for the neighbourhood burglar who’s eyeing up the presents under your Christmas tree…
Other people lock the door, but leave a key on a piece of string by the letterbox for the kids to use when they come home from school. However, even the most amateur of burglars know about that one.
How to Secure Your Home With Lights
We are not just talking about when you go out, but also when you are in the garden.
If you are having a bonfire in the back garden on a winter evening, it is very possible for a burglar to gain entry through a front window that is unlocked, especially if you have high hedges or shrubs which obscure anyone from the pavement. It is a good idea to trim high hedges so that your home IS visible from the road.
Another idea for how to secure your home when you are out or away is to leave the lights, radio or television on. Most burglars are not going to take the risk of breaking into a home if they think that it is occupied.
If you are going away on a skiing holiday, you can buy cheap timers to switch lights, radios and TVs on and off. There some some great timers out there that can detect daylight and will automatically turn off and on with the rising and falling of the sun.
These timers also come in handy when you’re popping out to collect the kids from their after school activities and want the house to look occupied.
Hide Your Valuables
Ensure that you keep valuables away from the windows so that they cannot be seen. This doesn’t just mean jewellery, but includes things like smart phones, laptops, tablets, and so on.
This is especially important to consider when the timer switch turns your lights on when you’re not there. After all, the switch can’t draw your curtains!
Be certain that the garage is locked, especially if you keep tools in there which could be used to assist a break in. Today you can buy locks which can be operated remotely by a smart phone or tablet so that you can lock or unlock the garage while you are out.
Secure Your Home With A Burglar Alarm
Another very obvious way to secure your home is to install a burglar alarm!
Put yourself in the shoes of your local, friendly burglar who has a choice of two homes; yours or your neighbours. Your neighbour has a very visible burglar alarm while you don’t, which home do you suppose he will choose?
In this day and age, it is common sense to install a burglar alarm, so don’t let your 20th Century home security turn your home into a target.
