There’s no doubt you’ve already seen Sainsbury’s Christmas advert featuring Mog, the famous illustrated Cat by Judith Kerr. The video has circulated the internet, mainly because of cute little Mog, but also because the advert contains an important message about Christmas safety.

Watch the video from Sainsbury’s YouTube channel below:

In the advert, we see Mog single-handedly burn down the house in a series of unfortunate events. But who is to blame here, clumsy Mog or the irresponsible homeowners?

You guessed it. The homeowners! There were two major mistakes made by Mog’s family before they went up to bed.

Mog’s life-saving Christmas safety message

Firstly, there was food left in the oven.

It is quite an old tradition now to leave the Turkey in the oven overnight so that it is cooked to perfection by the time the family arrive at 1pm. However, in this family’s case, it was the cause of Christmas devastation.

Our Tip: Leave any food out of the oven overnight, even if the oven isn’t switched on. Start the Christmas cooking when you wake up early in the morning. This way, you can keep an eye on your cooking.

Secondly, the Christmas tree lights were left on.

Possibly the biggest Christmas safety hazard of them all.

We get it. You’ve spent hours decorating each branch of your Christmas tree and making it look absolutely perfect. And now you want to show it off by leaving the twinkling lights on overnight. It makes you feel warm and festive…

But what happens when the plug socket overheats, explodes and starts a house fire?

Our Tip: Turn all Christmas lights off at night to avoid the sockets overheating or faulty lights malfunctioning. This should also apply when you leave the house for work during the day. Not only will this prevent a house fire, it is less likely to draw the eye of a Christmas burglar!

The biggest mistake of all – Where was the smoke alarm?

Did you notice how, even after the black cloud of smoke had erupted from the oven, the family were still sleeping soundly upstairs?

If they had a smoke alarm, they could have avoided this whole catastrophe!

The fire alarm would have detected the smoke soon after Mog accidentally turned the oven on, waking the whole family up and giving them a chance to avoid the situation earlier.

Put it this way. Imagine the outcome of Mog’s sleeping family members if she hadn’t accidentally called the fire brigade…

The thought is almost unbearable.

So, the moral of Mog’s Christmas Calamity is to practice our simple Christmas safety tips and safeguard your home with a smoke alarm

SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES

Burglars pick and choose what they take, house fires are less selective. They will simply take everything.
